Proverbs 1:1-7
Passage:
Proverbs 1:1-7 (King James Version)
Observation:
What does this passage say about God? The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
Who is this book written by? King Solomon gathered and collected knowledge, and was the wisest man of the world. He put this collection of sayings and wisdom together in one single collection.
Who is this book written to? Often the phrase "My Son" will appear to give the idea that this was written to the next generation. A legacy of knowledge.
What are some words used in this passage which give us clues to its meaning
From the NIV translation I found these words:
This is an introduction to the book of Proverbs by Solomon, Son of King David, King of Israel. The Book is a collection of wisdom, wise proverbs. But it's wisdom that gave Solomon the ability to be a good king and amass such wealth and riches making him a focal point in history. But it starts with "fear of the Lord" which means simply submission, reverence to the creator of the universe. This is also the idea that we understand that the Creator has put in this world order which needs to be followed, His law which he handed to Moses contains how He is honored, revered and followed.
Application
Our world has been duped in to believing the relativistic Idea that there is no absolute truth, there is no wisdom which can be handed down from generation to generation. The emphasis on teaching history has now been moved to teaching psychology, people are now more focused on how they feel, what makes them happy rather than focusing on finding Truth. Wisdom is the life of honoring and revering truth. In John 8:31-36 Jesus is speaking to the people who had belied his teachings:
Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? 34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. 35And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. 36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
In this world this is only one truth that really matters, and that is the person of Jesus Christ. He is the cornerstone of all wisdom and truth and you have only two options in a call to action. Is Jesus Christ who he claimed, or is he a liar. You might quickly jump to the assumption of his being a liar or even crazy, but be patient. Wisdom takes time to see-- in the proverbs passage the idea of dark sayings or enigmas, hidden but very visible. I love how Jesus creates a picture of bondage, or being a slave to lies. When wisdom and truth are executed the bondage to lies are broken, like chains on a slave being broken. Freedom is a result of knowledge and truth.

Proverbs 1:1-7 (King James Version)
1The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; 2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; 3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; 4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion. 5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: 6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings. 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
